You can skip the introduction and browse through the over 13000 names in my database at http://www.ged4web.com/derik/index.htm.
Introduction:
With a URL (website name) like www.papineaufamily.com, we get quite a few visitors with the last name Papineau or the surname Papineau somewhere in their family tree. This has motivated me (Anthony Papineau) to take an interest in researching my son's ancestors. To date, I have compiled over 13000 names of people who are related to my son, Derik Austin Papineau, or have contacted me and are related to the Papineau surname in some way (I keep this information because I am confident that I will one day find my relationship to all of them).
Special thanks to my father Paul W. Papineau (paul@papineaufamily.com). None of this would have been possible without his foresight in registering www.papineaufamily.com and his generosity in paying for the server space.
Contents of this website:
This website is becoming of a repository of names related to the Papineau Surname. And it is growing as I learn more. We currently know about 4 different lines of the Papineau surname. For a more detailed discussion of the 4 lines, please see me "Where my research stands to date" page.
I have traced my Papineau ancestors back to the early 1600's and we are not a direct descendants of the man normally credited with bringing the Papineau surname to North America (Samuel Papineau). I am now working on the theory that he is was a cousin of my Great X 9 Grandmother Marie Papineau, who lived in Bordeaux, France.
My Gx8 grandparents Anne LaMarque (daughter of Marie (Papineau) LaMarque) and Charles Testard had seven children one of which was my Gx7 grandfather Jean Baptiste Testard de Folleville dit Papineau. It would appear that he chose to take his maternal grandmother's maiden name as a "dit" name. As far as I can tell that is how my family came to become Papineau's.
What is a "dit" name you ask. If you are curious, please see the "dit" name explanation page.
When contacted by people who have a Papineau in there family tree, I always invite them to share what they have with me. I have included their information in my database, assuming that I will one day find my link to them.
Migration of my ancestors:
When my ancestors came over from France, they lived in the Montréal for 2 generations.
From there the next 4 generations lived in and around Louisville Quebec, which is on the SW bank of the Lac St. Pierre in the St. Laurence river between Montréal and Quebec city.
The following 3 generations lived in and around Woodslee in Essex county Ontario. Just east of Windsor Ontario.
In the early 1900's, my great grandfather immigrated to Detroit Michigan where my grandfather and father were born. While my son was born in California, I now live in North Carolina, my father lives in Italy, one of my sisters lives in Hawaii and my grandparents live in Florida, most of my family still lives around the Detroit area.

Updating my website with new information:
Because the size of my database is always expanding, I found that manually updating my website became an unmanageable task.
Being a Windows Programmer by trade, I have written a program to read my GEDCOM file and create webpages from it.
I have named it GED4WEB and you can get it at http://www.ged4web.com.
If you add to my knowledge of the Papineau Family tree, I will usually get it into my GEDCOM file, run it through GED4WEB, and have it updated on my website within a week. That day in some cases.
How I keeping everyone up to date:
With all the emails I receive from people about the Papineau surname, It seemed a logical decision to started an email list. This is a list for those interested in the Papineau surname. Whenever I learn new information, or I am contacted by another cousin who found my website, I inform all the other cousins by sending an email to this list. If this interests you, please join the list. You won't get any junk email and I won't share your name or email address with anyone. This is just an easy way for me to keep everyone up to date on what we learn. To learn more visit the PAPINEAU-L description page.
