On the way down from Villa Jovis, we detoured to the Natural Arch and posed for these pictures:

One of the most unusual flowers I saw from under my sweat drenched eye brows.  It was about as big as a coffee cup.

Lizard 11286 bytes)

Carol has a thing for lizards.  On this trip her lizard sighting hormone pump was in high speed.  Thank goodness she didn't try to bring one home; you can't house break them.

Carol's favorite pastime 15033 bytes)

After some exciting lizard watching, we walked into the town of Capri where Carol undertook her favorite sport, shopping.  As is the case with all tourist towns, there is plenty to buy.  In Italy, the plenty to buy includes many designer fashions.  Italy is, after all, the seat of fashion.

Carol didn't buy anything on this trip.   My feet can attest that it wasn't due to lack of trying.  Why don't they put chairs in the stores for the foot weary husbands and boyfriends?

After shopping we went to Anacapri.  It was a beautiful village and contained Villa St. Michele.  The villa was built by Alex Munthe starting in the 30's.  He refurbished and expanded an existing villa using pieces of Roman artifacts buried on the site.  He bought it from an old guy who was having difficulty planting his vines.  "..the whole ground was full of roba di Timberio, columns, capitals, fragments of statues and teste di cristiani.." which the old guy had to dig up and throw over the wall into the sea.

777 steps 15541 bytes)

The Phoenicians built the steps and the Italians built the road.  The road leads from Capri to Anacapri.  So do the steps for that matter.  The steps are cut into the solid rock of the mountain.  There are over 800 steps and, until recently, they were the only means to get to Anacapri.  Anacapri is a delicate little village perched on the cliff.  It is the home of many 'cello's', Lemoncello, Melloncello, othercello's.

To make Lemoncello:  1 liter of pure alcohol.   Soak peels of three lemons for three days in the alcohol.  Mix two cups of sugar in 1 liter of water.  Remove the lemon peels and combine the alcohol and the sugared water.  Sip from 2 ounce plastic cups (Italian Crystal).  Sleep well.

Ugly Fish Restuarant(14488 bytes)

That night we we went to the Golden Wave restaurant, recommended by a friend, for dinner.  We ordered wine, bread and a menu.  They served us American bread!  We drank the wine, paid the bill and left.  Carol suggested eating at the Ugly Fish restaurant in Capri.  So it was back up the Finiculari (all the tourists had gone home on the 5pm ferry so we had it to our selves)  The restaurant's real name turned out to be the Grottino.  The atmosphere and food were delightful.

Enjoying the meal (13239 bytes)

The gorgeous girl is Carol.  I don't know who the fat, old, balding guy is.  I hope he had money because she is a big eater.  Look at the smile.   She is taking him to the cleaners for sure!

We finished dinner about 10:30 pm and spent until the wee hours of the morning sitting in the village piazza sipping coffee, watching the poeple and talking.
