A LITTLE HISTORY |
| In 1984, our family moved to
England just West of London. I was the Submarine
Operations Officer for the Mediterranean and my wife was studying in
the British nursing system. We had three children that needed
looking after during the day. We decided to invite an Au Pair
from Europe to live with us. An Au Pair is a girl who, in
exchange for watching the kids and doing minor house work, gets room
and board, a few dollars a week and the opportunity to learn
English.
The arrangement only lasted for two weeks because that is how
long it took for our first Au Pair, Brigitte to stop hiding when I
was home. She was so shy. After that, she became part of
our family. We became a family bigger by one.
When her visit was up, Brigitte's sister Franci replaced
her. She was equally likable and even tried to teach me
French. What a hard taskmaster!
Before our relationship ended, their parents had visited, we had
visited their parents and we had built up memories to last a life
time. The last time we saw them was in December 1986 and this
is how they looked. |

party games for a birthday party (Monica's I think)..

| Every year we, like you, send Christmas letters to all our
friends. Two years ago we started including our email
address. What a surprise when we got email from Franci!
Since we will be leaving Italy to return to the United States in a few
months, we called and seized the opportunity to go visit for a few days.
Look at the difference 15 years can make! |
| We ate dinner at Brigitte's. From lower left to right: Carol, my wife,
Jordi, Brigitte's husband, Franci, Hanns, Brigitte and Franci's dad, and
Robin.
Look closely at the cooking trays. They are two layer
devices. A marble tray on the top is heated from underneath by
electric heaters which in turn cook cheese in trays that sit below the
heaters on the lowest tray.
You cook the meat on the top and broil the cheese below. |
