Egypt

On our second visit to Deruta, and we have made three with a fourth planned, we showed the owner the pictures we had taken of his shop on the previous trip and explained that we had placed them on the Internet.

He was thrilled, gave us several free pieces of his ware and showed us his laboratory.   Subsequently we learned that "Pinta di Mano" painted on the bottom of each piece of china in his shop means "Painted by Hand."  Every one of the beautiful items, no matter how complicated was painted by Mr. Nulli or his brother.

Block of Clay (8182 bytes)

Here is Mr. Nulli with a block of clay that he has just dipped in the water bucket.  The object closest to you on the table is also a block of clay.   The shop was about as big as the basement of the house where I grew up in Southgate, Michigan.

You can see the china beginning to take shape on the potter's wheel.   The wheel was electrically driven, but everything else was by hand.

I will show you the progress of two separate lumps of clay as they progress into a vase and a bowl.
