China, Williams Sonoma style.

During the early months of Fall 1998, Carol and I took a trip down the Amalfi Coast.   You can see the results of that trip by clicking on Amalfi Coast.  One of the many beautiful cities along the coast is Vietri.   Vietri is renown for its china as are Spoleto, Gubbio, Ravello and a host of other Italian cities.   Each city has its own unique style.   I found Gubbio's to be too dark, Ravello's to be an expensive collection of china from other cities and Vietri's to be more affordable than our favorite, Deruta.   Let's dish up a little Vietri.

This rather crummy picture shows the sign at the entrance to town.  It reads Vietri sul Mare, Vietri on the sea.  Such a sign is a rarity.   Towns do not usually have Welcome Signs at the entrance.  Most roads in Italy do not have name signs either, but they are well marked with directions to all the possible destinations.  I have developed the following methodology for finding a particular place.  Drive until I no longer see signs pointing to where I want to go.  Look out the back window at the signs for the traffic going in the other direction.   If I see the name of the place I'm heading for, I've passed it.  If I don't, I'm there.

Well, here we are in the main piazza looking out over the railing and SouthEast down the Amalfi coast. The town is very old, aren't they all in Italy...a town three times as old as the US is just getting started.  I would guess that we are several hundred feet up.

Carol is entering a Negotio di CERAMICHE, Armenante.  The stores on both sides have similar ceramic fronts.  Anything to capture tourist's attention.

They may have gotten Carol's attention, but they got my money.  Look at the expression on the dealer's face.  She is poised to lunge!  I'm lucky that I didn't come back with a bloody stump!
